The Formation of the Sutherland Athletic Association
For the past two years the Sutherland PTA has taken on the responsibility of athletics at the school. This has been a daunting task thus the PTA has chosen to release the athletics program from their responsibility. Athletes and parents were very fortunate that PTA took the athletic program under their wing but it is not feasible or appropriate for PTA to continue that role.
Therefore, on April 21, 2015 Principal Steinmiller held an athletic focus group meeting in the Sutherland auditorium to discuss the future of athletics at Sutherland. Notification about the meeting was posted on the school website calendar but unfortunately no further notice was given to parents, thus those in attendance found out by chance. Approximately 15 people were in attendance. Those present shared their vision for our student athletes (confidence building, teamwork, good sportsmanship, healthy competition, prepare for high school sports, develop fundamentals, skill building, expanding the number of sports offered at school, etc.)
A second meeting was decided at the close of the first meeting and Principal Steinmiller was to post the date May 13th 2015 on the school website. There were approximately 10 people in attendance. Insurance questions, league questions, Principal updates on new sports at Sutherland and coaching requirements were discussed. At the close of this meeting a third meeting was set for May 27, 2015. Principal Steinmiller posted this date on the school website calendar.
The third meeting was held on May 27, 2015 . The attendance was approximately 8 people. At this meeting insurance information was shared by a parent volunteer. Mr. Steinmiller provided a copy of the Keller School Athletic Board bylaws and suggested that it be considered as a reference to develop bylaws for a Sutherland Athletic Board. Creating a board was discussed.
Over the four meetings, those in attendance, have reviewed by-laws, researched liability insurance, discussed creating an association, considered becoming a 501 (c) 3 and decided to create an Interim Sutherland Athletic Board.
At the June 8, 2015 meeting Principal Steinmiller confirmed that the agenda of the meeting was to create an Interim Athletic Board. Ms. Parker began nominations and those in attendance accepted and provided additional nominations for an Interim Athletic Board. The four members nominated for executive board positions accepted with the understanding that this Interim Athletic Board will serve the 2015-16 school year and will be charged with the task of keeping our sports programs running smoothly through the transition from PTA to an official, elected Athletic Board for the 2016-17 school year.
The Interim Athletic Board executives are Tracy Bouck (president), Kristen Dimas (vice president), Christine O'Laughlin (secretary) and Eric Weigman (treasurer). Melvon Foster has volunteered to be a board committee member and four additional board committee spaces are available. All parents/guardians who are willing to volunteer their time to the development of the Sutherland Athletic Board are welcome to attend the next open meeting on Monday June 15th 2015 at 5:30pm in the Sutherland Auditorium.
